Notes | Not known if tank has been replaced since preservation. The true identity of this tender has not been confirmed at present but it is almost certainly not number 2389. According to information in the 1931 GWR Tender Register (RAIL 254/340) 2389 was the tender that travelled with locomotive 6000 to the Baltimore & Ohio Rly in 1927. The WR Condemned Locos, Boilers & Tenders book for 1962-1964 (Rail 254/158) has it withdrawn from use in October 1963 having last been used with GWR Modified Hall class 4-6-0 no. 7922 and a note in the same document indicates the intention to be put with loco 6000. However photos of tender 2389 shortly before withdrawal show it has early style Collett frames not the late style fitted to the current tender. A small plate attached to the front of the frames of the current tender states "experiment No. W/SW/L/96 tender No. 2873 hexagon headed spring hangers and rocking washers". 2873 was built with late Collett frames and this may well represent the true identity of the tender. |
