Notes | Imported 2007. The tender has been conserved largely in the condition it was in when purchased rather than undergoing a full restoration. The tender carries the number 3079 on a crudely made numberplate with the numbers created by weld. This was fitted at some stage during its service with South African Railways. Tender 3079 was built by the North British Locomotive Co (as was loco 3007) with a welded tank, fitted with a mechanical stoker and was classified as an ET Type with a water capacity of 5620 gallons. The preserved tender has a riveted tank and other design features indicate that it was never fitted with a mechanical stoker or designed, as some JT tenders were, to be retrofitted with a stoker. The exact origin of the tender cannot be ascertained but it is possibly one of the JT tenders never designed to be fitted with a mechanical stoker, these were numbered 854-859 and 2858-2922. All these tenders were built by German or other British manufacturers rather than North British Locomotive Co. Another possibility is that the tank from one of these batches has been fitted to the chassis of tender 3079. Any further information on the origin of this tender would be helpful. |
